Many of our peace t-shirts have generated great stories when worn on the streets of America. One very funny t-shirt encounter occurred in a mall in the Midwest. When shopping, whenever possible, wear your favorite t-shirt, preferably a political tshirt, and you will be a walking invitation for a story. While my friend and I were looking for a Starbucks as we walked past the lineup of kiosks in the mall, one of the young salesmen for Dead Sea skin products was frantically trying to wave us down—not for the reason you might expect, though. He didn't really want to sell us skin cream; instead, he wanted to talk to us. Shouting, "Shalom, shalom," as we approached, we finally realized that it was the peace tshirt causing his enormous excitement. Now, "shalom" simply means "peace" in Hebrew (among a number of other equally positive things), and as my friend was wearing her peace tshirt written in Hebrew script...well, the young lad thought he was back in the Holy Land. A political tshirt was speaking to him, loudly, from across the crowded mall, and he simply had to meet the wearer and see if she indeed understood the welcoming figure she presented to this Isreali citizen, selling skin products in an American mall. Well, this funny tshirt encounter turned even more interesting as we discussed the t-shirt, his native country and language and the beauty of "Shalom." He was confused though by our name.... "Tshirt Jihad! You like Jews, don't you? Of course, we launched into a staunch defense of our love for Jews... that our Jihad was simply a political t-shirt statement. In waging t-shirt jihad, we were combating the fear of words, the idiocy of suicide bombs and using our freedom of speech to promote politcal tshirt non-conformitee! All ended well. The Yeled was finally convinced we wished him "Shalom." In any language, our political t-shirts are truly a catalyst for international diplomacy.
